Enzo Fernandez scored the decisive goal as Chelsea FC secured a 1-0 victory over Leeds United to book a place in the FA Cup Final.
Fernandez’s first-half header at Wembley Stadium on Sunday proved enough to send Chelsea into the final, where they will face Manchester City on May 16.
The win came in Chelsea’s first match following the dismissal of manager Liam Rosenior, capping a turbulent period for the club. The Argentine midfielder had been at the centre of controversy in recent weeks after being dropped for suggesting he could leave at the end of the season.
Rosenior’s short tenure ended after a run of five consecutive defeats without scoring, culminating in a heavy loss to Brighton. His public criticism of the squad reportedly deepened tensions within the team.
Under interim boss Calum McFarlane, Chelsea delivered a more composed performance to keep their hopes of silverware alive despite a disappointing league campaign.
The breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when Fernandez headed home from close range after a precise cross from Pedro Neto, following a defensive error by Leeds.
Leeds had earlier threatened to take the lead through Brenden Aaronson, who failed to convert a clear chance, while Chelsea’s Joao Pedro struck the post at the other end.
In the second half, Leeds improved and came close to equalising, with Anton Stach forcing a strong save from goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Dominic Calvert-Lewin also missed a key opportunity as Chelsea held firm.
The match saw moments of tension, including a heated exchange between players after Sanchez went down injured, though the Blues maintained control to secure the win.
Eight-time FA Cup winners Chelsea will now make their 17th appearance in the final, aiming to lift the trophy for the first time since 2018. Their opponents, managed by Pep Guardiola, advanced after a 2-1 comeback victory over Southampton FC.
For Chelsea, victory in the final would offer a chance to salvage a difficult season and deliver a major trophy under interim leadership.
