Gunmen attack residential area in Yola, kill two local hunters
Gunmen have killed two local hunters and kidnapped a private security operative along barracks road in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
The fallen hunters include a veteran of Boko Haram war, Abdullahi Maikano, and his associate popularly known as Doctor within the local hunters’ architecture.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of Adamawa Police Command, SP Sulaiman Nguroje, said the command has deployed an anti-kidnapping squad to rescue the kidnap security operative and to apprehend the culprits.
Barracks road has become notorious for night raids by unremorseful and daredevil gunmen in recent days, despite the location of 23 armoured brigades in the neighborhood.
A local hunter who craved anonymity disclosed that gunmen have been making life miserable for the local hunters through ceaseless ambushes and attacks leading to the loss of lives and severe injuries.
He said “Last night’s attack on our personnel on the line of duty was, to say the least, one attack too many. All our members are in a somber mood today following the gruesome killing of two of our operatives. The trend has become disturbing in recent times.
“Barracks road neighborhood has in recent time become notorious for the activities of such deadly marauders. Our members have come under serious attacks in the area leading to grievous bodily harm.
“What even made the case pathetic is that sometimes, those behind the heinous crimes usually come out free. I could remember that sometimes back, two of the suspects of such crimes were released after detention by the police,” he said.
Also expressing hard feelings over the killing of Abdullahi Maikano, another local hunter who also craved anonymity said the death of the Boko Haram war veteran was simply devastating.
“I received the death of Abdullahi Maikano with shock and disbelief. Right now my spirit is very low because if a valiant warrior who fought Boko Haram for two good years can be cut short in this brutal manner then no one is safe.
“Abdullahi Maikano is a veteran in every sense of the word and his murder today has cast a veil of gloom in the local hunter’s community. I hope the government will come to the aide of the family of this veteran for the supreme sacrifice he made otherwise a number of us will feel outrightly downcast,” he said.
