5G Network: Police warn against disclosing OTP codes to strangers

The Cyber Crime Department of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has cautioned citizens against providing OTP numbers to strangers disguising as mobile network operators in charge of upgrading sim cards from 4G to 5G.

The technique is used by scammers to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

According to the police, some miscreants of cybercrime call mobile phone users and urge them to update their Sim cards from 4G to 5G and send the OTP numbers they receive via text message.

The force advised against providing the OTP received, saying it’s a tactic to defraud the user.

“If you tell them the OTP number sent by them, they will transfer all the money in your bank account or Mitra App to their account, so please don’t tell if any stranger asks for OTP, ” the police said.
