INEC declares Yobe South Senatorial election inconclusive due to over voting

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the Yobe South Senatorial District election held on Saturday inconclusive.

Professor Shettima Saidu, Returning Officer for the election, announced this at the collation centre at Federal College of Education (Technical) Potiskum, on Monday.

Saidu said the election was marred with overvoting in one polling unit and consequently cancelled.

According to him, the cancellation of votes at Polling Unit 003 Manawaci, in Fika Local Government Area, happened when the total votes cast exceeded the total number of people accredited.

Prof. Saidu said the cancelled polling unit has 1,118 registered voters and the total number of accredited voters in the polling unit exceeded the total number of registered voters, therefore INEC will schedule the election between the two leading political parties of All Progressives Congress (APC) which has 69,417 votes already and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which scored 68,800 votes so far.

“I want us to get it straight, the difference between the first and the second is 617. However, in the process of the election, we have had a total of 1,118 votes cancelled.

A fresh election is expected to be conducted in the area, he said.

It was gathered that some security personnel took proactive measures by condoning off the house of the incumbent senator, Mohammed Bomoi, to avert any attack ahead of the announcement of the result.

However, the police have not commented on the impending attack.
