Nigeria has highest number of students in University of West Georgia – Official

Story from Maimunat MOHAMMAD

Paul Sargent, the Director of International Student Admissions and Programmes at the University of West Georgia in the United States, revealed that Nigerians constitute the largest group of international students at the institution.

He made this statement during a virtual university showcase organised by the EducationUSA section of the U.S. mission in Nigeria, which aimed to provide insights into the various educational opportunities available to students in American institutions.

Sargent mentioned that the University of West Georgia, situated in Carrollton City, welcomes students from 63 different countries, including a significant number from Nigeria.

He highlighted that the current president of the International Student Club is Nigerian, showcasing the active involvement of Nigerian students in campus life.

The director emphasized the university’s commitment to delivering high-quality education to its diverse student body. He noted that over 70 percent of international students gain valuable career experience through on-campus or off-campus internships after completing their studies.

The university boasts of nine research centres and incorporates advanced technology in its classrooms.

Sargent also highlighted the university’s focus on fostering strong student-faculty interactions, with a student-to-faculty ratio of approximately 19 to one.

Sargent mentioned that many international students are unaware of their eligibility for study abroad opportunities, particularly at the undergraduate level. He encouraged students to explore the programmes offered by the university.

Additionally, he emphasized that the University of West Georgia is a cost-effective option, with tuition costs averaging between $12,000 and $16,000 for international students. Scholarships are also available to help students cover these expenses.

Regarding the recent Supreme Court ruling on diversity in admissions, Sargent stated that it would have minimal impact on the university’s international students. He clarified that race has never been a factor in the university’s application process, and the institution already boasts a diverse student body.

Sargent emphasized that the University of West Georgia is best suited for academically strong, independent students seeking an affordable educational opportunity. He highlighted the university’s rural campus with small class sizes, providing ample opportunities for leadership development.

He said the university offers numerous clubs and activities where students can take on leadership roles.

Sargent also stressed the financial advantages, as the university provides affordable options and offers substantial scholarship opportunities, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious students.

The University of West Georgia stands out as a preferred destination for international students, particularly Nigerians, due to its commitment to high-quality education, diverse campus environment, and affordability.
