NRC warns encroachers of railway tracks in Gombe

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has issued a warning to the people encroaching on railway lands and tracks in Gombe state saying illegal structures erected risk demolition.
The managing director of Railway Property Management Company Limited, a subsidiary of the Nigerian Railway Corporation charged with the responsibility of safeguarding the lands belonging to NRC nationwide Mr Timothy Zalanga gave the warning in an interview with journalists shortly after he inspected some plots and property of the corporation in Gombe state.

He explained that they embarked on such visitations nationwide to take proper audit of all railway lands adding that the exercise was in view of the fact that ‘railway is now back ‘ in the country.
He said already, the federal government had awarded contract for the rehabilitation of the line from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, Borno state assuring that the government is committed to resuscitating all railway corporations across the country.
“The railway is back, it will be back to serve Nigerians. For us, the overall interest of the bigger Nigerians is better than individual interest. So we will advise anybody that has built on the track or some where within the limit of the lines to remove their structures. Otherwise, we will not sacrifice the interest of the larger majority on individual’s bias.
“When we see that structures are coming without approvals, we will actually mark them for demolition or removal.”, he admonished.
Our correspondent observed that in many of the railway lands inspected, they were trespassed as some people erected shops or kiosks even on the tracks.
