Heavy gunfire erupts in Guinea’s capital city, Conakry

There was heavy gunfire in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, on Saturday, causing security forces to block off the centre of the city.

Witnesses reported gunfire from both automatic and large weapons in Kaloum, which is the political and administrative heart of the coastal city.

“The city centre has been sealed since dawn, we can neither enter, nor leave,” a shopkeeper said speaking on condition of anonymity.

“I wanted to go to the port area where I work but was prevented from leaving (Kaloum), where armoured vehicles have been deployed”.

Guinea has experienced a coup, similar to other countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon.

Following eleven years of democracy, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya led the coup in September 2021, which resulted in the junta taking control of the country.
