IGP rejects police constable recruitment list, alleges corruption, irregularities

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has rejected the list of successful candidates for police constable recruitment published by the Police Service Commission (PSC), citing alleged corruption and irregularities in the process.

In a statement released on Saturday, Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi revealed that the NPF had raised alarms over discrepancies and corruption in the recently announced names of successful candidates for the 2022/23 Police Constables Recruitment Exercise.

The NPF’s scrutiny of the list, prompted by numerous complaints and allegations from candidates and stakeholders, uncovered several issues:

– Inclusion of individuals who did not apply for the recruitment exercise
– Candidates who failed the Computer Based Test (CBT) or physical screening, or both
– Disqualified candidates due to medical unfitness
– Allegations of financial dealings and corrupt practices resulting in unqualified candidates being listed

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun formally objected to the list in a letter to the PSC Chairman, highlighting these irregularities. “While acknowledging the PSC’s Supreme Court-mandated authority to recruit for the police, the IGP stressed that this power does not extend to recruiting unqualified and untrained individuals”.

“Despite the establishment of a Joint Recruitment Board by the PSC to oversee the process, the board was reportedly hindered from fulfilling its mandate, including approving the final list”.

The NPF has called for a complete review of the recruitment process to ensure transparency and credibility, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for police reform.

The police force reassured prospective recruits of its commitment to a thorough review, aimed at recruiting qualified, competent, and trainable individuals for the Nigeria Police Force.
