Yobe NLC chairman remanded in prison for allegedly diverting palliatives

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Yobe State chapter, Comrade Muktar Tarbutu, has been remanded in prison for allegedly diverting palliatives meant for distribution.

Tarbutu was arraigned before Magistrate II Damaturu on Wednesday to answer to claims of misappropriating supplies provided by the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

The Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yobe State chapter, Barrister Mohammad Mohammad Ngumurumi, told Daily Trust that NEDC had given the palliatives to the NLC to share them among some select unions which he failed to do so.

‘‘The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed 25kg of 150 bags of rice, 150 bags of sugar, 150 cartons of spaghetti, 150 rappers for women, and 150 textiles for men as well as 150 blankets.

‘‘He was urged to share them among the members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

‘‘He didn’t share these items with NUJ and NBA, we asked him where ours is, he didn’t show us that is why NBA filed the case to the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) and he was arraigned, but he pleaded not guilty.

‘‘The Chief Magistrate II Damaturu, Hasiya Abubakar ordered his remand in prison untill the principal scheduled for April 18, 2024 ,’’ he added.

Daily Trust also gathered that in February 2024, during the NLC protest against the country’s economic challenges, members of the NLC Yobe State Council had criticised Tarbutu for allegedly being too close to the government.

  1. Left for me I wouldn’t advise my loved ones to contest for any position in union of whatever nature, especially in my state Yobe. It’s a place/position where God never adjourn their cases to heaven. One must be careful of deceiving and cheating others in the name of fighting for their course to gather worldly materials.
