Court summons EFCC chair for alleged contempt over moves to arrest Yahaya Bello
A Kogi High Court in Lokoja has issued a summons for the appearance of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, following allegations of contempt leveled against him by former Governor Yahaya Bello.
Justice I.A. Jamil of High Court IV ordered Olukoyede to appear before the court on May 13 to provide reasons why he should not face consequences for allegedly disobeying a court order.
The contempt charge stems from an incident on April 17 when EFCC operatives reportedly besieged the residence of the former governor, in contravention of a court order restraining such actions pending the determination of a substantive motion.
The court’s decision follows a motion ex-parte filed by Yahaya Bello’s lawyer, M.S. Yusuf, seeking the issuance of a Form 49 Notice to compel Olukoyede to justify his actions.

In granting Bello’s request, Justice Jamil emphasized the need for Olukoyede to respond to the allegations of contempt, considering the gravity of the matter.
The court’s directive underscores the principle of “Audi Ultra Patem” (listen to the other side), providing Olukoyede with an opportunity to present his case before the court.
The scheduled appearance of the EFCC Chairman on May 13 signifies a pivotal moment in the ongoing legal battle between Yahaya Bello and the EFCC, highlighting the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability in matters of justice.
