CGC Adeniyi, NOC President Gumel meet to foster sports development (Pictures)
The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adeniyi, welcomed the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, and his delegation to the Customs Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, May 27, 2024. The meeting aimed to explore opportunities and scholarships for young athletes to showcase their talents.
In his address, CGC Adeniyi recognized the significant role of the NOC in promoting the Olympic spirit both nationally and internationally. He praised the committee for its contributions to fostering a collaborative and supportive sports community.
Adeniyi emphasized the importance of sports within the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), highlighting the values of self-discipline and teamwork that sports instill. “Sports can serve as a powerful tool for promoting discipline and teamwork, essential qualities for success in any organization, especially in the paramilitary,” he stated. He further noted that physical fitness is crucial not only in sports but also in paramilitary organizations, enhancing performance, resilience, and overall health.

“As a responsive organization, we believe that sports management is about talent management. Identifying talents, nurturing them, and giving them the right exposure not only helps them represent and win but also brings value to the community that produces them,” Adeniyi added.
NOC President Habu Gumel expressed his gratitude for the meeting, applauding the NCS’s commitment to supporting and collaborating with the international Olympic community. He emphasized the NOC’s role in coordinating and supporting Nigerian competitors in the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. “The National Olympic Committee for Nigeria is responsible for ensuring that talents are identified, qualified individuals are prepared, trained, and given the opportunity to compete on global platforms,” Gumel said.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to fostering young athletic talent and promoting sports development in Nigeria.
