Catholic Bishops in Lagos maintain opposition to same-sex marriages despite Pope’s permission
In a bold stand against same-sex marriages, the Catholic Bishops of the Lagos Ecclesiastical Province, covering the Lagos Archdiocese, Ijebu Ode, and Abeokuta Dioceses, have reiterated their firm stance.
Defying the recent approval from Pope Francis for Catholic priests to bless same-sex unions, the bishops released a communiqué following their January 26 plenary meeting in Lagos.
Led by Most Rev Alfred Martins and Most Rev Francis Adesina, chair and secretary, the bishops affirmed their support for the traditional Catholic doctrine of marriage as the sacred union between a man and a woman.

They aligned themselves with the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria and the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar on this matter.
This statement showcases a potential split within the Catholic Church regarding the acceptance of same-sex unions, challenging the Pope’s stance in 2023.
Furthermore, amidst these discussions, concerns over the increasing hunger crisis in Nigeria have raised alarms, prompting cleric Dr. Isa El-Buba to urge President Bola Tinubu to tackle the issue promptly to prevent severe consequences.
El-Buba emphasised the rising food prices and urged the government to take action to ensure essential grains are affordable for the struggling population.
