Kano gov’t declares 24-hour curfew amid deadly hunger protest 

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has declared a 24-hour curfew in Kano as the ongoing hunger protest has turned violent in some parts of the state.

The governor declared the curfew at a press conference held at the Government House on Thursday.

He said, “After careful consideration, we have come to terms with the fact that 24 hours curfew should be put in place to further prevent looting and vandalisation of businesses and killing of innocent citizens.”

He directed all security agencies in the state to ensure full compliance with the directives to ensure restoration of peace in the state.

The protest in Kano State has escalated to a violent exercise, leading to the death of two persons from stray bullets while hoodlums loot laptops, chairs, and other valuables from government offices and shops.

The mob also burnt down the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) office, a filling station, and a Rufaida shop in Kano.

Kano is the third state after Borno and Yobe to impose a 24-hour curfew following the breakdown of law and order during the nationwide protests.
