Court summons CBN gov over detained Binance executive

A Federal High Court in Abuja has summoned the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Head of the Legal Services Department of the apex bank to appear before it with specific documents on Monday, September 2, 2024. This new date was set for the continuation of the trial in the money laundering case involving Binance Holdings Limited and its executives.

In a previous court session, the presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, had adjourned the case to October 11. However, following a request from the defence counsel, the trial date was brought forward by a month.

The case involves Binance USA’s Head of Financial Crime Compliance, Tigran Gambaryan, and the exchange’s British-Kenyan regional manager for Africa, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who are facing money laundering charges amounting to $35 million. The charges were brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Initially, both Gambaryan and Anjarwalla were detained by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). However, Anjarwalla escaped custody on March 22, 2024, while Gambaryan was transferred from ONSA to EFCC custody and later to Kuje Correctional Facility, where he remains detained.

In a document titled Subpoena Duces Tecum with charge number FHC/ABCR/138/2024, the court ordered the CBN Governor and the Head of Legal Services to appear before the court or delegate a representative. The subpoena specifically requested the production of a Certified True Copy of an Excel spreadsheet titled “Export Exchange Rate Results,” covering the period from June 1, 2024, to August 16, 2024.
