Police in Bauchi confirm boat capsize; 3 rescued, 2 missing in Gamawa

Story from Ahmad SAKA, Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of three people and the search for two others following the capsizing of a passenger boat in the Zindiwa River, Gamawa Local Government Area.

Police Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Ahmed Wakil, shared the details while addressing reporters in Bauchi. He explained that the incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, August 31, 2024, when a boat carrying passengers capsized in the middle of the river.

According to Wakil, the boat was serving as an alternative means of transportation after recent flooding washed away the main road connecting Gamawa with surrounding villages. Many residents in the area have relied on boats for travel, especially on market days or when needing to cross roads submerged by floodwaters.

Wakil stated, “At about 10:45 AM, we received a report from a good Samaritan that a boat piloted by Haruna Isah of Wabo village capsized while crossing the Zindiwa River with passengers on board. The passengers included Danjuma Ibrahim, 30, Shafiu Alhaji Awale, 40, Salisu Alaramma, 40, Yakubu Tela, 57, and Jamilu Kabiru, 22, all from Zindiwa village.”

The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Musa Muhammed, has directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Gamawa to lead the ongoing search operation. Wakil assured that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
