INEC uploads over 88% of Edo Gov election results on IReV
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uploaded over 88% of polling unit results from the Edo State Governorship Election held on Saturday, September 21, 2024. As of 6:40 PM, INEC had successfully uploaded the result sheets from 3,995 out of the 4,519 polling units on its Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
The election was conducted to determine the successor of the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, whose second term in office will conclude on November 12, 2024. Edo is one of eight states in Nigeria where governorship elections are held off-season due to litigation and court rulings. Other states include Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo.
INEC reported that Edo State has a total of 2,629,025 registered voters, of which 2,249,780 have collected their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) and are eligible to vote across 4,519 polling units.
Seventeen candidates contested the governorship, but analysts have identified the race as primarily between three key contenders: Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).

Akpata, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, enjoys the support of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, who gained over six million votes that year.
Ighodalo, a former chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), is backed by the outgoing governor Obaseki, who notably did not endorse his deputy, Philip Shaibu. Meanwhile, Okpebholo has secured the endorsements of former governor Adams Oshiomhole and Philip Shaibu, making the contest more dynamic.
The election has seen intense party rivalries across Edo State’s senatorial districts. The APC has control in Edo North, with Senator Adams Oshiomhole representing the area, and Edo Central, with Okpebholo serving as the current senator. Meanwhile, the Labour Party holds sway in Edo South, where Senator Neda Imasuen and candidate Olumide Akpata are based.
