21-year-old in police custody for desecrating graves, stealing iron rods

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested 21-year-old Dauda Saidu, a scavenger accused of desecrating graves at Yelwa Christian Cemetery and stealing iron rods.

According to police spokesman Ahmed Wakil, Saidu was apprehended on September 20, 2024, for trespassing, vandalism, and theft. He allegedly entered the cemetery in the Yelwan Kagadama area during daylight hours, damaging several graves and stealing iron rods.

During interrogation, Saidu confessed to the crimes, admitting to selling the stolen iron rods to scrap buyers for amounts ranging from ₦5,500 to ₦12,000 in separate transactions. He stated that he used the proceeds to purchase Indian hemp and food for personal use.

Commissioner of Police Auwal Musa Muhammad has directed that Saidu be prosecuted following the completion of investigations. He also emphasised the importance of parental supervision, urging parents and guardians to monitor their children closely.
