Why Anthony Joshua was ‘suspended’ following knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois

In the wake of a brutal fifth-round knockout by Daniel Dubois, boxing superstar Anthony Joshua has been handed a 28-day suspension from the sport. The British Boxing Board of Control issued the suspension after the two-time world heavyweight champion was floored four times in a crushing defeat at Wembley Stadium last Saturday.

The knockout came from a thunderous right hand delivered by Dubois, leaving Joshua sprawled on the canvas in a shocking end to the contest. The suspension, however, is nothing out of the ordinary—British fighters who suffer stoppage defeats are routinely sidelined for their own safety. This mandatory break is designed to ensure boxers do not return to the ring prematurely after suffering a heavy loss, a practice observed worldwide by governing bodies, including UFC.

Joshua’s suspension is set to expire on October 19, but fans needn’t worry. He has no plans to return to action during this period. The break will give him time to recover and re-evaluate his next steps in the heavyweight division.

Joshua’s Determination Remains Unshaken

Despite the crushing defeat, Joshua has made it clear—he’s not done yet. “I’ll come back stronger, better, and more prepared,” he promised, dismissing any speculation about retirement. A rematch against Dubois is on the horizon, with Dubois’ promoter Frank Warren suggesting February 2025 as a potential date.

“That fight is on the table. If Joshua’s team wants it, we’ll make it happen. February is the ideal time,” said Warren.

Joshua could also choose to bide his time, awaiting the outcome of the highly anticipated Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury rematch in December. His longtime sparring partner, Frazer Clarke, believes patience is key, advising the former champion not to rush any decisions.

As Joshua’s fans look forward to his eventual return, the boxing world waits to see what lies ahead for the heavyweight star—whether it’s a rematch with Dubois or another chapter in the rivalry with Usyk and Fury.
