Varsity suspends HOD for altering examination results

Joseph Akpan, a lecturer and Head of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Calabar (UniCal), has been suspended due to alleged misconduct.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, announced the suspension on Wednesday in Calabar. She stated that Akpan is accused of altering 235 examination result scripts by misusing his position as HOD.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, he allegedly changed students’ scores for the Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology (PHM 311) course, modifying scores in 235 out of the 242 result scripts under his supervision.

“The lecturer also allegedly awarded marks to two students who did not participate in the examinations,” she said, adding that only five scripts were genuinely marked without any alterations.

The Vice-Chancellor claimed that Akpan admitted to the misconduct before the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC).

According to her, the lecturer allegedly confessed to inflating scores for students in PHM 311 in an attempt to protect the department’s image, which management finds both ridiculous and unacceptable.

“Consequently, the management of the university has directed that he be relieved of his appointment as HOD and Coordinator of PHM 311, as well as suspended from duty, effective October 8, 2024.

“Akpan’s official responsibilities will be reassigned to other qualified lecturers in the department.

“He has also been directed to stay away from the university unless responding to an invitation from relevant committees,” she said.
