Ex-DG NIA, Ambassador Zakari Ibrahim, dies at 81

Ambassador Zakari Ibrahim, a former Director General of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA), has passed away at the age of 81. According to a statement released by his family, the distinguished diplomat died in Abuja following a brief illness.

Ambassador Ibrahim, known as Talban Katsina, was laid to rest at the Dantakun Cemetery in Katsina after funeral prayers held at the Katsina Emir’s Palace, attended by Governor Dikko Radda, his chief of staff Jabiru Tsauri, the Emir of Katsina, Dr Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, and other dignitaries, including former NIA DG, Ambassador Abubakar Ahmed.

Governor Radda expressed deep sorrow, praising Ibrahim’s commitment to national security, diplomacy, and service as a symbol of Katsina’s proud legacy. “His passing is an irreparable loss not only to Katsina State but to Nigeria as a whole,” he stated, highlighting his achievements as NIA DG, Deputy National Security Adviser, and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Hon. Abdullahi Aliyu Ahmed, representing Musawa/Matazu Federal Constituency, described him as a “gem of inestimable value” who significantly shaped Nigeria’s security landscape. The Emirate and several dignitaries extended heartfelt condolences.

Born in Katsina on 15 March 1943, Ambassador Ibrahim followed in the footsteps of his father, Talban Katsina Alhaji Ibrahim Mashi. He was an alumnus of Bayero University Kano and had advanced degrees from institutions in the UK. He was a respected educator, diplomat, and community leader, known for his philanthropic efforts, including support for the Katsina Islamic Foundation.
