Port Harcourt refinery starts production

The Port Harcourt Refinery has officially resumed full operations, marking the long-awaited return to processing crude oil.

This milestone follows numerous missed deadlines and delays that had sparked skepticism about the refinery’s ability to meet expectations.

Olufemi Soneye, spokesperson for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), confirmed the development on Tuesday, stating that the refinery is currently operating at 60 percent of its installed capacity.

This equates to the processing of around 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

“The Port Harcourt Refinery has successfully resumed crude oil processing, now operating at 60 percent capacity, which equates to 60,000 barrels per day,” Soneye stated in a press release.

With a total refining capacity of 210,000 barrels per day across its two plants, the Port Harcourt Refinery remains a key asset to Nigeria’s oil sector.

However, the refinery had faced years of challenges, including poor maintenance, outdated infrastructure, and management issues, which resulted in its shutdown and a prolonged period of inactivity.
