Police alert increasing ritual killings tied to hookup
The Nigerian Police Force has issued a warning about the growing link between ritual killings and the rise of hookup culture among young women.
Omolola Odutola, the Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Police Command, raised the alarm during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief.
Speaking on the topic “Hookup Culture: Impact on Youth Values and Relationships,” Odutola revealed that women aged 20 to 32 are increasingly being targeted for ritual killings, with many cases involving hookup platforms.
“Currently, we receive numerous reports of missing persons, and by the time investigations begin, at least 10 young women are reported missing daily,” Odutola stated.
She further explained that most of these disappearances are not accidental but are tied to ritual practices.
Many of the victims, she said, are lured by strangers through hookup apps or social media platforms, leading them to dangerous locations where they become targets for ritual killings.
“These cases are often linked to hookup apps and platforms, where young women are invited to unfamiliar places and fall victim to ritualists,” she added.
The police spokesperson emphasized that while ritual killings are not new to Ogun State, they have intensified due to the belief among some young people that participating in such practices can lead to wealth.
“We have individuals who deceive young people into providing human skulls or body parts, which are then used for concoctions aimed at gaining wealth,” she explained.
Odutola urged young people to resist the lure of quick riches and emphasized the ongoing efforts by the Ogun State Police Command and the State Women Affairs Commission to tackle the issue.
“The Ogun State government, especially the Women Affairs Commission, is working closely with the police by offering counseling sessions,” she said.
