SGF urges northerners to wait for 2031 presidential bid

Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has urged those seeking the presidency from the North in 2027 to wait until 2031.

During an appearance on the “Politics on Sunday” program on Television Continental, hosted by Femi Akande, Akume also appealed to Nigerians to support the passage of the proposed bills, emphasizing that they were thoughtfully designed for the benefit of the country.

Akume reassured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu still enjoys significant goodwill, despite the controversial tax reform bills and other major economic decisions made in the past 17 months.

He specifically defended the Tax Reform Bills, describing them as well-crafted laws that, once fully enacted by the National Assembly, will help steer the country out of its current challenges.

He stated, “President Tinubu, through the reform bills, aims to reposition the nation’s economy, just as he did with the removal of the fuel subsidy and the harmonization of foreign exchange windows.”

“It’s much easier to destroy than to build. The various reforms being introduced are meant to rebuild the Nigeria that was damaged by previous administrations,” he added.

Akume assured that Nigerians would soon begin to see positive results from the ongoing reforms.

The SGF also advised those aspiring to the presidency to wait until 2031, when President Bola Tinubu would have completed his second term.

He said, “President Tinubu, as a Southerner, deserves a second term, so those from the North aspiring for the presidency in 2027 should look beyond that year and wait until 2031.”

He further stated, “If it is God’s will for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to become president, even at 90, he can achieve it. However, he and other Northerners eyeing the presidency should look beyond 2027.”
