IPI Nigeria re-elects Musikilu Mojeed as President, Shekarau Secretary

The Nigerian chapter of the International Press Institute (IPI) has re-elected Musikilu Mojeed, Editor-in-Chief of Premium Times, as President, alongside Ahmed I. Shekarau, CEO of the Media Trust Group, as Secretary. The duo, alongside four other officials, were elected unopposed and sworn in on Thursday to steer the affairs of IPI Nigeria for the next three years.

The announcement was made in a statement by Raheem Adedoyin, a member of the IPI Global Executive Board. Other elected officials include Fidelis Mbah of Al Jazeera Television as Deputy President, Rafatu Salami of Voice of Nigeria as Treasurer, Yomi Adeboye of Herald Newspaper as Assistant Secretary, and Tobi Soniyi of Arise News as Legal Adviser.

During the inauguration, Mojeed pledged an inclusive administration, urging members to support the team’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s media landscape. The election followed IPI Nigeria’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), where the outgoing executives rendered their three-year stewardship report and presented the organisation’s financial records. Amendments to sections of the organisation’s constitution were also made at the AGM.

The event was highlighted by the attendance of former Ogun State Governor and veteran journalist, Segun Osoba, who commended IPI Nigeria members for their dedication to press freedom and independent journalism. Osoba, who had just returned from an overseas trip, praised the organisation’s leadership for a successful conference and AGM.

Notable journalists and media executives at the event included former Tribune Newspapers Editor-in-Chief Folu Olamiti, ex-Presidential Spokesperson Garba Shehu, and ICIR Board of Trustees Chairman Oluwafisan Bankale. Others in attendance were Professor Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika of the University of Lagos, Kunle Babs of Feature Story News, and Dotun Oladipo, publisher of The Eagle Online.

Ahead of the elections, IPI Nigeria hosted a conference themed “Democracy, Media Freedom and the Imperative of Protecting the Nigerian Civic Space.” The conference, which attracted prominent stakeholders, featured a keynote address by Professor Tony Iredia, who argued that press freedom remains constrained in Nigeria, contrary to the claims of the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who chaired the opening session.

Other speakers included the DSS Director-General, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, who discussed the media’s relationship with security agencies, and EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, who called for stronger partnerships between journalists and anti-corruption agencies. Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, also addressed participants on fostering understanding between the government and media to avoid censorship.

The three-day event concluded with a dinner celebrating IPI members and partners, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to press freedom and independent journalism in Nigeria.

IPI Nigeria operates as the local branch of the Vienna-based International Press Institute, a global network advocating for journalists’ rights and media freedom since 1950.
