“How I outwitted 40 police officers, escaped arrests” – Kano Governor’s aide recounts ordeal

Sanusi Bature, the Director General of Media and Communication to the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, has narrated his dramatic escape from arrest by the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Team. Speaking during the PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship in Kano on Saturday, Bature revealed how he sought refuge at the Kano State Government House for five days to evade the officers.

Bature disclosed that his sanctuary at the Government House was based on the constitutional immunity that prevents law enforcement from making arrests on the premises without the governor’s approval. “The police can not arrest anyone within the Government House unless they have the express permission of the governor,” he stated.

The media aide explained that at least 40 officers were deployed by the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Team to apprehend him following a petition. He said, “So, there was this petition against me that nobody is handling except the IG himself. He deployed 40 personnel of the IG Monitoring Team squad to Kano since Sunday with the mandate of arresting me.”

Bature revealed that a court order restraining the police from arresting him had been issued and circulated online. “The court order has not been officially served to the police, but it’s already viral. I’m confident they must have seen it,” he added.

He further declared, “I confidentially ventured out because I’m well fortified to resist arrest if it happens. I knew I had to attend this event no matter what, even if it meant risking arrest.”

While addressing the PRNigeria fellows, Bature used the opportunity to highlight the significance of mentorship and the benefits it offers in navigating professional challenges. He shared lessons from his experience, advising young communicators to build resilience in the face of adversity.

Bature’s ordeal has sparked conversations about the relationship between public officials and law enforcement in Nigeria. His claims about immunity and the involvement of high-ranking police personnel suggest a deeper legal and political context.
