Media Chief slumps as funfair stampede claims lives of 35 children
The city of Ibadan was thrown into mourning on Wednesday after a tragic stampede during a funfair claimed the lives of 35 children. The incident occurred at Islamic High School, Bashorun, where the event was held.
Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, the owner of Agidigbo FM, who had actively promoted the funfair through his radio station, is now battling for his life after collapsing from the shock of the tragedy. Sources close to the media chief revealed that he was rushed to an undisclosed hospital after becoming unconscious upon hearing the news.
The funfair, which was meant to bring joy to families and children, turned into a nightmare when overcrowding led to a stampede. Witnesses reported chaos as attendees struggled to find safety, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of 35 children.
A close associate of Hamzat, who preferred to remain anonymous, disclosed that the broadcaster has been in critical condition since the incident. “He is currently unconscious in the hospital. The shock was too much for him to handle,” the source said.
The deaths of the children have sent shockwaves across Ibadan and beyond. Families of the victims are grappling with their devastating losses, while the broader community is calling for accountability.

Many have criticised the organisers of the funfair for failing to implement adequate crowd control and safety measures.
As news of the tragedy spread, social media platforms were flooded with messages of condolences and calls for better safety regulations at public events. Hamzat, a respected figure in media and known for his philanthropic efforts, has received an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues who are praying for his recovery.
The incident has raised concerns about event planning and the safety of attendees, especially children. Critics have pointed out the lack of emergency protocols and poor crowd management as contributing factors to the disaster.
Local authorities have yet to release a statement addressing the incident, but calls for an investigation into the organisers’ role and the failure to prevent the tragedy are growing louder.
The tragic deaths of 35 children and the hospitalisation of Oriyomi Hamzat have cast a sombre shadow over Ibadan. As the city mourns, families, friends, and well-wishers are left to grapple with the heartbreak and unanswered questions surrounding the tragic event.
Efforts to provide counselling and support to the affected families are underway, while the community looks to authorities for answers and assurances to prevent such tragedies in the future.
