Man kills wife of 17 years over yam
A tragic domestic dispute in Ebonyi State has left residents of Nsokkara, Ezza South Local Government Area, in shock after a 40-year-old man, Joshua Nwafor, allegedly beat his wife to death on December 16, 2024.
According to eyewitness accounts, the argument between the couple of 17 years began over how to prepare a yam for the family’s meal.
The wife reportedly preferred a roasted yam, while her husband insisted on cooking it. When she proceeded to roast the yam against his wishes, tensions escalated, and he dragged her into a room, locked the door, and beat her to death.
“I am one of the advocates for walking out of a marriage instead of dying in such a marriage. Life has no duplicate. No matter how old that marriage is, when it becomes life-threatening, please find your way. Leave very fast and never mind what people would say,” an eyewitness urged.

The spokesperson for the Ebonyi State Police Command, DSP Joshua Ukandu, condemned the incident, assuring the public that investigations are ongoing and that justice will be served. “Rest assured that the command will conduct a thorough investigation and charge whoever is found wanting,” he stated.
This tragic case has reignited conversations about domestic violence and the need for individuals in abusive marriages to prioritise their safety over societal judgment.
