IGP denies urging Nigerians to attack officers during stop-and-search
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, did not direct Nigerians to attack officers during stop-and-search operations.
In a statement released on Monday, NPF spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi refuted claims circulating online, which falsely suggested that Egbetokun had instructed citizens to physically assault or throw stones at police officers when asked to search their phones.
The statement emphasized that these claims were completely untrue and had no basis. It further stated that the Inspector-General has never encouraged violence against law enforcement agents. Instead, Egbetokun has urged citizens to report police misconduct through appropriate channels, promoting accountability and the rule of law, rather than resorting to violence.
The NPF advised the public to remain cautious of misinformation and to verify any information from reliable sources.
The statement also reiterated the NPF’s commitment to fostering a positive and cooperative relationship between the police and the communities they serve.
