Christmas Tragedy: 22 injured in Gombe as bus ploughs through procession
A Christmas day celebration turned tragic in Gombe State as a Sharon bus lost control and struck a group of Christian faithful on a procession, leaving 22 people injured.
The incident occurred around 2pm near the popular IMAN restaurant on Bauchi Road. Witnesses reported that the vehicle’s brakes allegedly failed, causing it to veer into the celebrants who were heading to the Government House and the Emir’s Palace for homage.
In the ensuing chaos, angry bystanders attacked the driver, who managed to escape. The mob then destroyed and set the vehicle, loaded with rice and grains, on fire.
Gombe State Police Command spokesperson, Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed the incident. “The injured have been taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe and Specialist Hospital for treatment. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported,” he said.
He also revealed that the Commissioner of Police has ordered a detailed investigation into the crash, led by the Motor Traffic Department.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed his sympathy to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the victims. During a visit to the Government House, he pledged that the state government would cover all medical expenses for those injured.
The police, alongside CAN leaders, worked quickly to restore calm, while security forces, including soldiers, police officers, and road safety personnel, cordoned off the area.
As the investigation continues, the police have urged the public to remain calm and avoid further violence.
