Boko Haram/ISWAP strike military base in Borno, kill 7 soldiers, others missing

Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a devastating assault on a military base in Borno State, killing several Nigerian soldiers and leaving many others unaccounted for.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday, January 4, 2025, targeting the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Sabon Gari in Damboa Local Government Area.

According to security sources, the ambush began at around 4 a.m., with the terrorists deploying a variety of weapons during an assault that lasted over two hours. The attack also saw several military vehicles and buildings set ablaze, leaving the base in ruins.

“So far, over seven bodies have been recovered,” reports stated on Monday, referring to soldiers from the 25 Taskforce Brigade stationed at the base. “Many others are still missing following the raid.”

This attack underscores ISWAP’s growing influence in the Lake Chad region, bolstered by defections from Boko Haram fighters after the death of their leader, Abubakar Shekau.

The militant group continues to strengthen its foothold in key areas of Borno State and beyond.

Despite this setback, the Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring peace in the region. However, the insurgency remains a significant threat, with thousands killed and millions displaced across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.

This attack is one of many in the key Northeastern state. After such tragedy, security forces will regroup and assess the trail of damages, while putting on more efforts to prevent further onslaughts and bring those responsible to justice.
