Police unveil anti-money laundering units to curb financial crimes

In a strategic move aimed at bolstering national security and combating terrorism financing, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has established Police Anti-Money Laundering Units across Nigeria. These units are tasked with preventing and detecting illicit financial activities that pose threats to national stability.

The Police Anti-Money Laundering Units, overseen by CP Hyacinth Azuka Edozie and manned by Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) within State Criminal Investigation Departments (SCIDs), are set to enhance the operational capabilities of law enforcement agencies.

According to Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, this initiative supports the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) in its global oversight role to address various security threats effectively.

IGP Egbetokun urged all citizens to actively participate in safeguarding national security by promptly reporting any suspicious activities related to counterfeit currency and financial crimes.

This call to vigilance aims at the importance of community involvement in combating illicit financial activities that undermine national stability.

The establishment of these Anti-Money Laundering Units represents a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s defence against terrorism financing and other financial crimes. By leveraging specialized expertise and enhanced operational capacities, law enforcement aims to safeguard the country’s financial integrity and promote public safety.
