Alleged ₦1.96bn Fraud: Court fixes January 31 for trial of former Acting Accountant-General
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, has set January 31, 2025, for the trial of Anamekwe Nnabuoku, the former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, over alleged financial fraud amounting to ₦1.96 billion.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Nnabuoku on January 15, 2025, on an amended nine-count charge. The charges border on criminal conspiracy and money laundering, following the plea bargain agreement of his co-defendant, Felix Nweke.
During the arraignment, the EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Martha Babatunde, informed the court about the amended charges, which were read to Nnabuoku. The defendant pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution requested that Nnabuoku be remanded in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Centre pending his trial. However, his defence counsel, Isidore Udenko, filed a bail application.

Justice Omotosho granted Nnabuoku bail in the sum of ₦500 million with two sureties in like sum. The court stipulated strict conditions, including:
The sureties must own landed properties within Abuja, valued at no less than ₦250 million each.
They must provide an affidavit of means, bank statements, and tax clearance certificates for three years.
These details must be verified by the court’s registrar.
The matter was adjourned to January 31, 2025, for trial.
