Natasha Challenges Akpabio: ‘I’m not afraid of you’

Tensions flared in the Senate on Thursday when Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan had a heated clash with the leadership over a seating arrangement dispute.

The conflict began after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s seat was reassigned following a reshuffle triggered by opposition members switching to the majority wing. Despite this, she refused to comply with the change.

Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno, defended the decision by referencing Senate rules, stating that the Senate President had the authority to make such adjustments. He also warned that failure to comply could result in penalties, including being barred from participating in Senate debates.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio supported Monguno’s order, refusing to allow Akpoti-Uduaghan to speak from her original seat.

In response, the Kogi lawmaker raised her voice, accusing the leadership of attempting to silence her. “I don’t care if I am silenced. I am not afraid of you. You have denied me my privilege,” she boldly declared.

The standoff escalated when the Senate President instructed the sergeant-at-arms to remove Akpoti-Uduaghan from her seat. However, other lawmakers intervened, helping to calm the situation, though Akpoti-Uduaghan remained steadfast in her refusal to move.
