Prof. Hamma advocates for legal education reform in Nigeria

In a recent interview with Neptune Prime, Professor Hadiza  Hamma, a seasoned lawyer and academic from the University of Abuja, emphasized the urgent need for reforms in Nigeria’s legal education system.

She acknowledged the efforts of the Council of Legal Education but stressed that faculties of law require significant improvements, particularly in infrastructure and funding.

Prof. Hamma highlighted the lack of essential facilities for practical legal training, such as moot courtrooms, which are crucial for shaping competent lawyers. She noted that some law faculties lose accreditation not due to a shortage of lecturers but because of inadequate facilities necessary for hands-on legal education.

“We need better funding and more practical training in legal education. Theoretical knowledge alone is becoming outdated, and without practical exposure, law students will struggle to become competent professionals,” she stated.

She called for increased investment in educational infrastructure and a shift towards more experiential learning to ensure Nigerian law graduates are adequately prepared for the legal profession.
