Gabon’s military leader, Brice Nguema wins presidential election

Story from Hamzat Ibrahim

Brice Oligui Nguema has emerged victorious in Gabon’s presidential election, securing a dominant lead over his rivals, according to provisional results released by the Interior Ministry on Sunday.

Nguema, who led a 2023 military coup and brought an end to the Bongo family’s 55-year rule, was declared to have won about 90 percent of the vote.

His closest challenger, Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, received around three percent in Saturday’s election.

The Interior Ministry also announced that voter turnout stood at 70.40 percent.

The military leader had been widely predicted to win the race, which featured eight candidates. On election day, Bilie-By-Nze expressed concern over the integrity of the counting process, saying there were “potential” problems.

Nguema, however, assured that the vote was conducted fairly, stating the electoral process was “transparent”.
