Tension gripped Rano Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday following the death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, in police custody. The incident triggered violent protests and led to the burning of the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters.

Abdullahi, who was arrested for allegedly violating a traffic rule, reportedly died during interrogation. Eyewitnesses and residents claimed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), identified as Baba Ali, subjected the young man to a severe beating, which resulted in his death.

A resident of the town said, “He was not a criminal. He was picked up for a traffic matter. People are angry because he died while in the custody of those meant to protect him.

The news of his death spread rapidly, prompting youths to march to the police station demanding answers. What began as a peaceful demonstration quickly escalated when officers allegedly opened fire to disperse the crowd.

Two youths were reportedly shot and are currently receiving medical care at a local hospital. In retaliation, the angry crowd hurled stones at the officers and eventually overpowered them, setting the police facility ablaze.

“The DPO, according to sources, sustained serious injuries in the clash.

The eyewitness added, “We saw them dragging the DPO away after he was injured. Things had already gotten out of control at that point.”
