Kano State Hisbah detains nine for alleged  eating on first day of Ramadan

The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested nine Muslims in Kano for allegedly eating in public during daylight hours on the first day of Ramadan.

The board’s Deputy Commander, Mujahid Aminudeen, confirmed that the suspects — seven men and two women — were apprehended on Wednesday after they were reportedly seen eating openly while the fast was ongoing.

According to Aminudeen, the individuals are currently in the custody of the board, where they will undergo religious guidance.

“We arrested them and they are with us. We will teach them the importance of fasting, how to pray, how to read the Qur’an, and how to become good Muslims,” he said.

He did not specify when the detainees would be released.

Kano State, a predominantly Muslim state, implements Sharia law alongside Nigeria’s conventional legal system. During Ramadan, Hisbah officials typically patrol markets, eateries, and public areas to ensure Muslims comply with the fasting requirements observed from dawn to sunset.
