Lina Medina: Youngest confirmed mother in history at age 5
Lina Medina is a Peruvian woman born on 23 September 1933. She later became the youngest confirmed mother in history when she gave birth to her son Gerardo on 14 May 1939 when she was just five years, seven months, and 21 days.
Based on the medical assessments of her pregnancy, she was less than five years old when she became pregnant, which was possibly due to precocious puberty.
It all happened when her parents took her to a hospital in Pisco at age five due to increasing abdominal size. Doctors originally thought she had a tumour but then determined that she was in her seventh month of pregnancy. Dr. Gerardo Lozada of the Lozada family called specialists to confirm the pregnancy.
Lina’s case is one of the most extraordinary and perplexing examples of precocious puberty ever documented, where a child’s body matures at an exceptionally rapid pace.

Her pregnancy shocked the world and brought attention to the rare and little-understood condition of early puberty, challenging conventional knowledge of human development.
Due to her extremely young age and small size, doctors performed a caesarean section to deliver the baby safely. Both Lina and her son survived, marking the birth a remarkable medical event.
Her baby weighed 2.7 kg (6.0 lb; 0.43 st) at birth and was named after Lina’s doctor, Gerardo. The boy was raised believing Medina to be his sister before finding out at age 10 that she was his mother.
However, the case was shrouded in mystery, as the identity of the father was never established, and many questions remained unanswered about how such a young child became pregnant.
As she grew older, Lina lived a quiet, private life, eventually marrying and having another child. Despite the passage of decades, she remains the youngest mother on record.
