Police nab robbery, drug suspects in statewide raids

Story by Tawheed Yakub, Abuja

The Niger State Police Command has arrested several suspects in a series of coordinated raids across the state as part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on thuggery, robbery, and drug-related crimes.

In a statement on Saturday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, said the operations were carried out between October 21 and 23, 2025, in Kontagora, Minna, and Bida.

According to Abiodun, operatives attached to the ‘A’ Division in Kontagora conducted a sting operation at the Tudun-Wada area on October 23, arresting three suspects identified as Abdullahi Abdullahi (22), Fahad Abubakar (19), and Nasiru Aliyu (28) all residents of Tudun-Wada.

“They were found in possession of a large quantity of suspected cannabis, two knives, and a pair of military trousers,” Abiodun said, adding that investigations were ongoing to determine the source of the drugs and possible links to a wider criminal network.

He further disclosed that similar raids were conducted in parts of Minna, including Angwan-Sarki, Kuta Road, Sabon-Gari, Ogbomosho, Baida, and Makera, where seven suspects were arrested.

The suspects Hamza Dauda (28), Hussain Sanda (25), Sani Hassan (22), Danlami Garba (25), Saidu Hassan (19), Musa Umar (21), and Hassan Usman (25) were reportedly caught with cannabis, shisha pots, and other illicit substances.

“All seven suspects have been charged to court as of October 24, 2025,” the statement added.

In another operation, two robbery suspects, Aliyu Salihu (25) and Jibrin Ndako (22), both from Barkin-Saleh in Minna, were arrested by police operatives attached to Maje Division while attempting to flee to Kogi State after a robbery in Bida.

Abiodun explained that the suspects were intercepted at Tungan-Shanu, Maje, around 6:45 p.m. on October 22, while riding a white, unregistered Lucky motorcycle. Investigations revealed they had earlier robbed a student in Bida at about 2:30 a.m., carting away the motorcycle, four mobile phones, and ₦40,000.

“The suspects confessed to the crime, and items recovered from them included the motorcycle, four handsets, two ATM cards, and ₦7,000 part of the stolen cash,” Abiodun stated.

He said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Minna, for further investigation.
