Chelle vows to lead Nigeria to 2026 World Cup
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed confidence that Nigeria will qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging his players to adopt a “warrior mindset” ahead of the playoffs.
Speaking on 90 Minutes with Mathematical on Eagle7FM, the Franco-Malian tactician thanked fans for their unwavering support and credited them for inspiring the team’s recent resurgence.
“Thanks to the fans. Thanks to Nigeria. I’m happy to have brought smiles back to their faces. We beat Benin because the fans pushed the players,” Chelle said. “I’ll do my best for Nigeria, and Inshallah, we will go to the FIFA World Cup.”

Since taking over in January, Chelle has revived the Super Eagles after a poor start to the qualifiers, leading them to four wins and two draws in their last six matches.
Nigeria, however, must still battle through a continental playoff in November after finishing as one of the best runners-up in Africa. Their first test will be a one-legged tie against Gabon, with a possible clash against Cameroon or DR Congo to follow.
“Qualifying for the World Cup is not a war, but it’s like one,” Chelle said. “My players must think like warriors — they have to be like sharks.”
