FG dismisses Trump’s claim, rejects “Country of particular Concern’ label”

The Federal Government has dismissed comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump alleging widespread killings of Christians in Nigeria and designating the country a “Country of Particular Concern.”
In a statement on Saturday, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said Trump’s assertions do not reflect Nigeria’s realities.
“The Federal Government notes the remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump. These claims do not represent the situation on ground. Nigerians of all faiths have coexisted peacefully for decades,” the statement read.

The ministry added that while Nigeria values global advocacy on human rights and religious freedoms, the allegations were “inaccurate and misleading.”
It stressed that under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria remains committed to combating terrorism, promoting religious harmony, and safeguarding all citizens.
The government also pledged continued diplomatic engagement with Washington to deepen understanding of security dynamics in the region.
Trump, in a Truth Social post shared by the White House, claimed Christianity in Nigeria faces “an existential threat,” citing alleged mass killings of believers. He urged U.S. lawmakers to take action and review relations with Abuja.

His comments follow recent calls from U.S. Congressman Riley Moore for tougher diplomatic measures and suspension of arms sales to Nigeria over security concerns.
Meanwhile, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, in an interview with CNN, rejected claims that terrorists primarily target Christians, stating that both Christians and Muslims have been victims of violent attacks.
Also, a European Parliament Committee visiting Abuja this week advocated stronger protection for vulnerable communities and increased accountability in tackling insecurity.
