MURIC condemns U.S. lawmakers over anti-shari’ah remarks, defends northern governors

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has strongly criticized recent comments by some United States legislators calling for the abolition of Shari’ah law in Nigeria and threatening to impose sanctions on 12 northern governors.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Islamic rights organization described the U.S. lawmakers’ stance as “unguarded, undemocratic, and demagogic,” accusing them of attempting to impose Western values on Nigerian Muslims.
MURIC said:
“We reject the attempt by U.S. legislators to impose the American value system on Muslims around the world, including Nigerian Muslims. The negative comments about the Islamic legal system coming from the U.S. are, at best, unguarded, undemocratic, and demagogic.”
The group argued that the practice of Shari’ah in the 12 northern states followed due democratic process, reflecting the will of the majority in those regions.

“The states practicing Shari’ah in Nigeria introduced it through their Houses of Assembly in line with global legislative standards. Islam is the religion of the overwhelming majority in those states, and the people have shown no dissatisfaction with its application,” MURIC said.
It warned that any attempt by foreign legislators to interfere in Nigeria’s internal affairs or abrogate Shari’ah law “through extra-judicial or alien interpretations” would amount to an assault on Nigeria’s sovereignty and a violation of international law.
“Such actions undermine the ideals of democracy, deface the rule of law, and threaten global peace,” the group added.

MURIC also condemned threats directed at northern governors, describing them as “elected leaders who emerged through free, fair, and credible elections endorsed by international observers.”
“The U.S. threats against these governors are an unacceptable attack on Nigeria’s democratic process and an insult to the cultural dignity of Northern Nigeria,” the statement read.
The organization urged U.S. lawmakers to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and democratic choices, insisting that Shari’ah represents the Muslim way of life and must not be politicized or interfered with.
“We call on U.S. lawmakers to allow Nigerian democracy to thrive. Leave Northern lawmakers alone. Shari’ah is the free choice of Nigerian Muslims. We strongly condemn U.S. attempts to harass or intimidate Northern state actors over Shari’ah,” MURIC declared.
