Yobe orders closure of boarding schools over insecurity

The Yobe State Government has directed the shutdown of all boarding secondary schools as a precautionary measure to safeguard students amid rising security concerns.
The decision, announced on Saturday by Governor Mai Mala Buni, followed a security meeting held with heads of security agencies in the state to assess recent attacks on schools in other regions.
The development was confirmed in a statement released by the Director General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Mohammed Mamman.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has already issued a notice ordering the immediate closure of the affected schools.
“A notice signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Bukar Aji Bukar, directed the immediate closure of all secondary schools pending improvement in the situation,” the statement read.
Mamman added that Governor Buni urged residents to continue supporting security efforts through prayers.
“Governor Buni called on the people of the state to pray for the leadership, security operatives, peace, and improved security in the country,” he stated.
Yobe now joins other northern states that have recently closed their boarding schools following multiple incidents of student abductions and attacks on communities.
Reports earlier indicated that several students from St. Mary’s School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, were abducted by armed groups in the early hours of Friday.

This incident occurred just days after another attack in Maga, where 25 students were taken, intensifying concerns over worsening security challenges facing schools across the region.
