Samuel Eto’o wins second term as Cameroon’s football chief

Samuel Eto’o has been re-elected as president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), earning a second four-year term after a vote held Saturday at the General Assembly in Mbankomo. Running unopposed, the football legend won by a wide margin, receiving 85 of 87 votes, with two ballots deemed invalid.
His re-election comes despite ongoing friction between FECAFOOT and the Ministry of Sports, which had questioned the transparency of the electoral process and raised concerns over alleged irregularities. Delegates, however, opted to proceed, with FECAFOOT insisting the election complied fully with its statutes.
In his acceptance speech, Eto’o thanked delegates for their “renewed mandate of trust” and pledged continued reforms focused on youth development, stronger domestic leagues, improved governance, and better support for national teams.

During his first term, which began in December 2021, Eto’o introduced several reforms, including restructuring the domestic league system, securing new sponsorship deals, enhancing player welfare, upgrading training facilities, and pushing for greater international visibility for Cameroonian football.
However, his tenure also saw controversy, from inconsistent national team performances to recurring clashes with the Ministry of Sports over decision-making authority.
As he begins his second term, Eto’o faces growing expectations to stabilize administration, boost national team results, and deepen structural reforms. Supporters cite his global experience as a strength, while critics warn that institutional conflict could hinder progress.

With a renewed mandate and strong backing within FECAFOOT, Eto’o now has a fresh opportunity to drive long-term growth in Cameroonian football.
