Rivers deputy governor, SSG defect from PDP to APC

The Rivers State Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu, and the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Benibo Anabraba, have formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant political realignment in the state.

Prof. Odu officially registered as a member of the APC in her ward in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) on Sunday. She completed her e-registration at Akabuka, Ward 8, Unit 11, before embarking on a tour of the six zones of the local government area to mobilise residents and promote the ongoing APC e-registration exercise.

During the tour, the deputy governor called on residents to show their support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Siminalayi Fubara by joining the APC. She explained that the registration drive followed Governor Fubara’s declaration for the party and was aimed at strengthening grassroots support for both the president and the governor.

According to Odu, six zonal meetings had earlier been organised to ensure effective mobilisation and the smooth conduct of the registration exercise across ONELGA.

“Today, I came to sensitise the people, and everywhere we went, there were large crowds who came out to receive us. They said wherever I go, they will go with me, and wherever Governor Fubara and President Tinubu go, they will go,” she said.

She noted that the tour covered Egi, Omoku, Osomini, Igburu, Egbema and Ndoni, adding that the massive turnout and enthusiasm signalled growing acceptance of the APC within the area.

Prof. Odu also received defecting members of the Labour Party (LP) in Ndoni, describing their move as a boost to the APC’s strength in ONELGA and evidence of increasing grassroots alignment with the leadership of President Tinubu and Governor Fubara.

Meanwhile, the SSG, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, formally resigned his membership of the PDP in a letter dated January 5, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 1 in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area. The letter was submitted through the party’s ward office at Bob-Manuel’s Compound, Abonnema.

In the letter, Anabraba described his decision to leave the PDP as a personal one taken after careful consideration. He expressed appreciation to the party for the political opportunities and support he received during his time as a member.
