NNPC confirms new Oil Well discovery, boosts Nigeria’s energy prospects

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has confirmed the successful discovery of a new oil well, marking a significant boost to Nigeria’s upstream oil and gas sector.

The discovery was made through the Awodi-07 appraisal and exploration well located in the shallow offshore area of the western Niger Delta. NNPC said drilling and testing confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons across multiple reservoir zones, following extensive data acquisition and analysis.

According to the company, drilling activities commenced in late November 2025 and were completed by mid-December 2025, with operations carried out safely and in line with regulatory standards. The oil find was achieved under the NNPC Ltd and Chevron Nigeria Limited joint venture.

NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the discovery as a reflection of strong technical expertise and effective collaboration, noting that it reinforces confidence in Nigeria’s hydrocarbon potential.

The new oil well is expected to improve future production capacity, with the joint venture targeting output of up to 146,000 barrels per day when fully developed. NNPC said the development will support government revenue, job creation and national energy security.

The discovery is also seen as a positive signal to investors, aligning with ongoing reforms in the oil and gas sector aimed at expanding reserves and sustaining Nigeria’s position as a major energy producer.
