2027 Polls: INEC relocates registration units across wards in Yobe

In a decisive move to increase electoral participation, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Yobe State will deploy registration units directly to local wards for a 50-day period.
State Resident Commissioner, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, announced the new strategy in Damaturu on Tuesday, attributing the shift to a “relatively low turnout” in the first phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

He explained that the initial phase, which concluded on December 21, 2025, recorded a preliminary total of 55,070 new registrants.
Commissioner Abdullahi cited seasonal farming, insecurity, and difficult terrain as key barriers the ward-level exercise aims to overcome.
“To ensure inclusivity and access for all eligible citizens, the commission has approved the devolution of the registration exercise to the Registration Area (RA) ward level,” he stated.
The intensive outreach, utilising INEC Voter Enrollment Devices (IVEDs), is scheduled to commence on February 2, 2026, with the final week of operations based at local government offices.

Abdullahi called on traditional rulers, civil society, and the media to spearhead mobilisation efforts in their communities.
“We urge them to capitalise on this widened access, which will guarantee their eligibility to choose their leaders during the 2027 general election and beyond,” he emphasised.
The commissioner highlighted a critical backlog of uncollected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

He revealed that a mere 1,100 out of 42,756 PVCs from previous registration drives have been collected since August 2025, urging all affected individuals to immediately retrieve their cards from local INEC offices.
