Nigeria places Lagos, FCT, eight states on Ebola emergency watch amid fresh outbreak concerns

Nigeria places Lagos, FCT, eight states on Ebola emergency watch amid fresh outbreak concerns

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated an emergency Ebola surveillance alert in Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory, and eight other states following renewed outbreaks of the deadly virus in parts of Africa.

The agency said the heightened monitoring became necessary due to increasing regional transmission risks and the possibility of imported cases through international travel, border movements, and commercial activities. States placed under intensified surveillance include Lagos, Rivers, Kano, Enugu, Borno, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba, Adamawa, and the FCT.

According to health authorities, the alert follows reports of rising Ebola infections linked to the Bundibugyo strain currently spreading in parts of East and Central Africa. Officials warned that the strain remains a major concern because there is presently no approved vaccine specifically designed for it.

The NCDC stated that emergency response systems, airport screenings, laboratory preparedness, contact tracing mechanisms, and rapid response teams have already been activated across the country to prevent any possible outbreak.

Despite the heightened alert, the Federal Government assured Nigerians that there are currently no confirmed Ebola cases in the country. Health authorities also urged citizens to remain calm while maintaining proper hygiene practices and reporting any suspected symptoms to medical officials immediately.

Lagos State health authorities said surveillance operations have been strengthened across hospitals, ports, and entry points due to the state’s status as Nigeria’s busiest commercial and international travel hub.

The latest alert has revived memories of Nigeria’s successful containment of the 2014 Ebola outbreak, when swift emergency interventions helped stop the deadly virus from spreading nationwide after it entered the country through Lagos.
