Emir of Gazargamu dies in Egypt after a prolonged illness

The Emir of Gazargamu, His Royal Highness Alhaji Ahmad Tijjani Ibn Saleh, has passed away after a prolonged illness.

The revered traditional ruler died on Tuesday in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

His death was confirmed by his son, Engr. Tijjani Hamisu Bala, who currently serves as General Manager of the Yobe State Road Maintenance Agency (YORMA).

Announcing the sad development in a statement, Bala described the late monarch as a father, mentor and respected traditional ruler whose life was dedicated to the service of humanity and the development of his people.

“With profound sorrow and total submission to the will of Almighty Allah, I announce the passing of my beloved father, namesake and traditional ruler, His Royal Highness Alhaji Ahmad Tijjani Ibn Saleh, the Emir of Gazargamu, who returned to his Creator today, June 9, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt, after a protracted illness,” he stated.

He noted that the late emir’s reign was characterised by wisdom, humility, courage and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of his subjects.

“His fatherly guidance, leadership and legacy will remain a source of inspiration to us all,” Bala added.

He prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the deceased monarch, asking that his shortcomings be forgiven and that he be granted Al-Jannatul Firdaus. He also prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and the entire Gazargamu Emirate.

As of the time of filing this report, funeral and burial arrangements had not been announced. It also remained unclear whether the late monarch would be buried in Nigeria or Egypt.

The death of the emir has sparked mourning across Yobe State and beyond, with many paying tribute to his leadership and service to the Gazargamu Emirate.
