Chelsea has confirmed the £47.5 million signings of Red Bull Leipzig striker Timo Werner, who is ‘delighted’ by the moved.

The Germany international has put pen to paper on a five-year deal worth nearly £180,000-a-week to link up with Frank Lampard’s side.

He is Chelsea’s second summer signing following the previously confirmed transfer of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax. Werner had been courted by Manchester United and Liverpool, with the latter widely expected to sign him, but Chelsea swooped in and brought him to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea chief Marina Granovskaia added: “We are very excited that Timo Werner has chosen to join Chelsea. ‘He is a player who was coveted all over Europe and it is no surprise, he has that rare mix of being young and exciting and yet established and proven.

“We can’t wait to have Timo on board, but until then we wish him and RB Leipzig all the best for the rest of this season.” Werner has become one of the most feared strikers in Europe and has banged in 32 goals in all competitions this season.

Chelsea boss Lampard has been targeting a striker since his return to Stamford Bridge as a manager, but failed in January bids for Edinson Cavani and Dries Mertens. However, he has finally landed a striking force to take the weight off Tammy Abraham’s shoulders.

Werner, who has been capped 29 times by his country, can play anywhere across the frontline and will provide flexibility for Lampard to rotate his attacking options.
